Connections 2.0 is fresh and released, just after downloading it I updated my beta environment to the gold code. Not a single issue arised

Image:Connections 2.0 Gold - Upgrade is complete (WOW)

It looks "plain connections 2.0" since upgrading I removed all my customizations that I'll add back in a moment.

If you're looking to setup a connections 2.0 environment keep this in mind:

  • The automated installation has improved a lot, use the wizards package to setup DBs whatever db you're using
  • Also use the wizard to populate the profiles DB, this works if your ldap directory is well organized (inetOrgPerson, no strance hierarchies)
  • At the end of the setup process you've a "working" connections 2.0 environment, working doesn't mean ready for use by users

After you get connections 2.0 working you may (will) want to:

  • Install IBM HTTP Server / Web server and the WebSphere Plugins
  • Open up WAS admin console and register the HTTP Server (Server -> Web Servers)
  • Modify the Connections applications to map web applications to the WebServer (Applications -> Application name -> Manage modules -> add the web server to the deployment list for the application
  • Save yout configuration
  • Go to "Environment" -> generate/update plugin configuration
  • Restart the HTTP Server so it immediately updates the config
  • At this point you can get to connections over port 80
  • You'll also need to activate the HTTPS plugin in your http server to allow for https on port 443 (see this article)
  • You'll also want to install a new SSL certificate that maps to your hostname and avoids users from getting the "certificate warning"
  • Finally change LotusConnections.xml in the ...profilepath../config/cells/cellname/LotusConnections directory and remove the reference to Webpshere HTTP ports so that the "navigator" application (the one that builds the top navigation) can link to URLs on standard ports (80 and 443)
  • Now restart all your connections application servers and you're an happy man ...

Most of this is not "so well documented" in the infocenter ... I've had to guess it ... Websphere experience helps a lot here.

You can still need to do other customizations but this is a good start to make connections friendly for users and firewalls (without the HTTP server you can access connections on a  number of non-standard ports)

Then you still need to configure / customize:

  • Overall: custom themes (some body like Chris Whisonant is working on this)
  • Homepage: Global search and admin roles
  • Profiles: Admin roles and global search seed roles
  • Blogs: Admin roles and global search seed roles
  • Communities: Admin roles and global search seed roles
  • Dogear: Admin roles and global search seed roles
  • Activities: Admin roles and global search seed roles

But this is another story.

Don't try to do anything before the the infocenter is published (unless you love headaches) ...

My final comment so far:

A huge  THANK YOU to all the developers, project managers, friends that built Connections 2.0. I've participated to the beta program, every week they we're telling us new things and explaing a lot. Thank you !!! this has been a great beta experience for me.

But I'm sure .. more is coming.
